WOLVERINE STATE HOSTS TOUR OF CHAMPIONS; DUX DO IT AGAIN
The Zeeland West High School Dux may be relative rookies, but as their record indicates they play like veterans. After only seven years in existence, the varsity football team is celebrating their 2nd state title. “This couldn’t happen to a better group of kids,” said Head Coach John Shillito.
Tuesday night, January 3rd, the Zeeland West gymnasium (located between Holland and Grand Rapids, MI) hosted a couple hundred fans anxious to see their varsity basketball team play. Just outside the main doors though, the buzz was “What’s the Army National Guard here for?” and “What’s that trophy all about?” Well, the 7th Annual MaxPreps Football Tour of Champions presented by the Army National Guard was on hand to celebrate Zeeland West’s championship season and high national ranking.
Moments before the players came out for warm-ups, the public address announcer called everyone’s attention to center court. A Tour of Champions media backdrop bearing the Army National Guard and MaxPreps logo was placed at center court. Andy Auclair, a MaxPreps representative, explained the MaxPreps national ranking poll. The Dux football team was honored for placing No. 83 from over 16,000 football teams being considered across the nation. Sergeant Travis Wilson of the Michigan Army National Guard presented the Army National Guard national ranking trophy to Coach Shillito and the team. “That’s the most impressive trophy we have received. Thank you,” said Coach Shillito referring to the 20 inch piece of hardware known as the “Minuteman” symbolic for dedication, commitment to a cause and perseverance.
Four or five local media outlets covered the event, and snapped pictures and video footage to an elated group of young players all decked out in their commemorative Tour of Champions t-shirts. Obviously, this group of dedicated coaches is working hard to establish a winning culture in this young program. We look forward to hearing from the Dux of Zeeland West in the future.
