Despite cold, rain, and windy conditions the Zeeland West girls track and field team put out several top performances, including a school record, on their way to a strong second place finish at the OK Green conference track and field meet on Friday. Hamilton won the meet with 167 points followed by Zeeland West with 136, and Holland Christian rounding out the top three with 84 points. The second place finish combined with a conference record of 4-1 cemented the Lady Dux’s second place finish in the OK Green this season.

The Lady Dux had five conference champions during the meet. Junior Josie Smith won the pole vault with a vault of 10’0″, senior Haley Hoogenraad won the 800 with a time of 2:24.80, and sophomore Julia Babinec won the 100 meter hurdles with a time of 16.43; setting a huge PR and breaking the school record set by Sarah Kamstra in 2012. On top of those individual event champions, the Lady Dux also won two of the meet’s four relays; winning the 4 x 800 with a time of 9:56.78 by the team of Haley Hoogenraad, Morgan Overweg, Lydia Bekius, and Brinley Schenk, and the 4 x 4 with a time of 4:18.95 by Haley Hoogenraad, Josie Smith, Kynzie Ward, and Delaynie Ward.

Other top three performances on the evening came from sophomore Olivia Kraft taking second in both the discus (117’7.5″) and the shot put (33’5.5″), Shanna Han second in the long jump (15’6.75″), Lydia Bekius third in the 800 (2:33.74), Haley Hoogenraad third in the 1,600 (5:20.98), Brinley Schenk third in the 3,200 (11:59.62), Julia Babinec third in the 300 hurdles (52.26),  and a third place in the 4 x 100 by the team of Alissa Sayavong, Maddie Overweg, Alyssa Ortiz, and Nicole Diekema (54.05).

The Lady Dux had ten All-Conference nominations due to their performances on the night and throughout the season. Congratulations to seniors Haley Hoogenarad and Lydia Bekius, juniors Morgan Overweg and Josie Smith, sophmores Brinley Schenk, Kynzie Ward, Julia Babinec, Olivia Kraft, and Shanna Han, and freshman Delaynie Ward on your All-Conference selections!

The Lady Dux, ranked 5th in this week’s MITCA Team State rankings, officially clinched a birth to the Team State Meet which will be held in Linden, MI in two weeks. The Lady Dux will now have a week off before they compete in the regional meet next week Saturday in Allendale.
