Game Recap

The Dux varsity soccer team tied the Broncos of Coopersville, 1-1 on Senior Recognition Night in front of their home fans Thursday. Despite great possession and ball movement in the first half, it was the Broncos that struck first off of a direct kick just outside the box. “Our defense played a little too tight in the penalty area, and didn’t leave enough room for our GK to operate because of a miscommunication. When she came out for the ball, she collided with a couple of players and got caught up in traffic, and the ball somehow found its way into the back of our net. A bit unlucky,, but that is a play that we have to make going forward into the state tournament.”
Despite dominating the first half and generating multiple chances, Coopersville’s keeper kept them in the game. “In the first half, we did everything right except putting the ball in the back of the net. We played a bit more reactive than proactive, and were just a half-step slow on some of our finishing opportunities.”
In the second half, the Dux dominated from the first whistle, generating chance after chance, and earning a half dozen corner kicks, but were unable to capitalize until the final 10 minutes of the game. Sam Hecht collected a ball in the box in traffic, turned and chipped the ball back across the box where Kayla Burrows headed it down and back across goal for the equalizer. “I can’t say enough about how well we played tonight, especially in moving the ball and attacking with a purpose. We need to do a better job at finishing our chances, but the possession, intensity, and desire were there the entire second half. I’m really proud of our resiliency tonight, and the way in which they embraced the game plan. Coopersville is a good team, and we need to play well against good teams at this time of the year.”
The Dux are 9-7-3 on the year, finishing in 3rd place in the OK Green (5-5). The final regular season game is next Wednesday, as they host Allendale.
