The Zeeland West girls track and field team won the Division 2 MITCA Team State title on Saturday with a score of 1,026.5 points, followed by Grand Rapids Christian in second with 955 points and Hamilton in third with 925 points. The Lady Dux performed well across the board; besting their seeds for an additional 144 points on the day! The state title was the first for the Lady Dux since the school’s opening in 2006.
The Lady Dux had one event winner on the day as junior Josie Smith won the pole vault by vaulting a height of 10’0″. Other top five finishes for the Dux came from sophomore Shanna Han finishing third in the 200 meter dash with a time of 27.94 and the long jump with a jump of 16’1.75″, senior Nicole Diekema finished fourth in the 200 with a time of 27.98, senior Haley Hoogenraad took second in the 800 with a time of 2:23.79 and fourth in the 1,600 with a 5:26.63, sophomore Brinley Schenk was fifth in the 3,200 with a time of 12:04.36, sophomore Julia Babinec was third in the 100 hurdles with a time of 16.80, sophomore Olivia Kraft was fourth in the discus with a throw of 106’9″, and junior Lilly Jacobs finished 4th in the high jump with a jump of 4’6″
The relay teams also performed very well for the Lady Dux with the 4 x 800 team of Lydia Bekius, Haley Hoogenraad, Morgan Overweg, and Brinley Schenk finishing in third with a time of 10:06.14, the 4 x 400 relay team of Kynzie Ward, Delaynie Ward, Josie Smith, and Nicole Diekema finished in third with a time of 4:19.15 and the 4 x 100 team of Maddie Overweg, Shanna Han, Alyssa Ortiz, and Nicole Diekema finished in sixth but set a new school record with a time of 52.09!
Saturday’s meet marked the end of the season for all but nine of the ladies who will be competing in next week’s individual state finals held in Zeeland. Congratulations to those who finished out their season, and best of luck to those who will still be competing next Saturday!
