Game Recap

The Dux girls varsity soccer team punched their ticket to the District Finals this Saturday, after downing the Bulldogs of Byron Center by a score of 5-0. After a scoreless first half, the Dux offense took over scoring 5 goals in the final 40 minutes of regulation. Yulissa Rodriguez opened the scoring after Kayla Burrows beat her defender on the outside and drove a ball back across the box. Rodriguez calmly settled the cross, and blasted a low shot into the right corner less than 5 minutes into the second half. Vanessa Kaseumsouk scored the second goal, after Kylee Winn beat her defender on the outside and played a ball in towards the near post. Kaseumsouk’s outside of the foot redirection caught the keeper off balance, and her shot hit the net on the far side of the goal. Ryleigh Farrell scored a pair of goals over the next 10 minutes, giving the Dux a commanding 4-0 lead with about 15 minutes to play. Ryleigh’s first goal came off of a corner kick by her sister, Halie. Halie’s cross cleared the first line of defenders, and Ryleigh run through the ball, putting it in the wide open net. Her second goal came off of a long throw-in from Kylee Winn. Ryleigh’s 45-yard run from the middle of the field surprised the BC defense, as she slid her shot under the arms of a charging keeper. Sam Hecht finished the scoring for the Dux, after gathering a ball near midfield, and beating several opponents before slipping the ball by the charging keeper, and blasting the ball into the back of the net.

Hannah Brouwer and Lexi DeYoung recorded the shutout for the Dux. The Dux are 12-7-3 on the season, and will take on the winner of Holland Christian and Grand Rapids Christian on Saturday, @ 1:00pm at Eagles Stadium in Grand Rapids.

“At half time. we made some simple adjustments offensively that allowed us to let the ball work for us, rather than against us. We struggled a bit with the surface in the first half, as it is much faster than our home field. However, we played really intelligent team soccer in the second half, and were able to better execute offensively in finishing our chances. Our defense played solidly throughout, and came up huge twice in the final minutes, to help preserve the shutout. We need to clean a few things up before Saturday, but our team is in control of its own destiny, and that is really exciting to watch.”
