The DUX boys cross country team finished their season this past Saturday at the MHSAA state finals. The team was represented by Bryce Arredondo and Matt Converse. Both Bryce and Matt qualified for the finals by placing 4th and 5th respectively at the Regional meet the previous Saturday.

The top 242 boys out of over 3,000 division 2 boys cross country runners stepped to the line at 1:30 on Saturday. Both Bryce and Matt had the goal of finishing in the top 30 in the state to earn all state honors. In order to do so they had to push their limits in the first mile and position themselves with the leaders As the gun sounded both runners sprinted to join the lead group. After the 1st mile both guys we in a solid top 30 position. At the second mile, Matt had fallen into 32nd and Bryce had dropped to 40th. The quick start was beginning to take its toll. With 1/2 mile left in the race Bryce had pushed past his threshold and faded as he finished. He raced to be all-state. He gave it all he had, but he was just on the other side of his limit on the day. His top 100 place in the state (83rd) was the 4th best by a DUX runner in team history. It was a bitter end to an excellent season for Bryce. Matt held strong to the finish. Within the last mile he passed a few more runners and when the final results came in, he became the second DUX in team history to earn all-state honors. His 29th place finish in the state was the 2nd best finals finish in school history and represented the 5th fastest sophomore time in the state. It was a fitting finish to spectacular season for Matt. Both guys gave it their all and represented the team well.
