The JV girls basketball team fell to a 1-loss Holland Christian squad on Thursday, 22-46. Despite being extremely undersized and somewhat out-manned, The Dux battled hard for four quarters. The game started fast as the 1st quarter was very high-paced for both teams. Holland Christian would get a pair of threes, while the Dux would get a three of their own from Raegina Pung. The 1st quarter ended with the Maroons on top 16-9. The pace would slow just a bit as both teams settled in defensively in the 2nd quarter. The Dux were able to manufacture just 1 made field goal on an inside score from Andrea Valdes. Kylee Winn made 2-3 free throws and Raegina Pung split a pair. Despite struggling on offense, West was able to hold HC to 9 points in the quarter and kept themselves in the game, trailing 25-14 at the half. West would struggle offensively in the 3rd quarter as a three from Raegina Pung would be the only points West would score for the quarter, while HC scored 8 points, widening their lead to 33-17 after three quarters. Though West would continue to battle, HC was able to continue stretching their lead for the final score of 46-22.
“Prior to the Zeeland East game on Monday, we went through a stretch where, for a handful of games, we weren’t competing with the heart and toughness that we normally do. Obviously against a Rival (Zeeland East) its typically not too hard to play with effort and energy, but I was happy to see us get back to doing that against a really good team. HC was much bigger than us across the board, yet I thought we did a really good job rebounding and getting after lose balls. The character of this team is extremely high and their resolve is unbelievable.”
Raegina Pung led the team in scoring with 7 points, including two 3 pointers. Andrea Valdes chipped in 6 points and double digit rebounds.
Kylee Winn 4 pionts. Ellie Highley 2 points. Kayla Roberts 2 points. Sydney Lewis 1 point.
