Game Recap

The Dux girls varsity soccer team defeated Zeeland East, 1-0, to improve to 6-1-1 in OK Green Conference play, and 9-3-2 overall. The Dux came out firing on all cylinders in the first half, generating several quality scoring opportunities, but East’s Hope Steenwyk made several great saves to keep the score knotted at 0-0 heading into the half.

“We took the wind in the first half and used it to our advantage by keeping possession of the ball in our attacking third. They packed it in defensively, and made it difficult for us to get much on our shots. We hit a crossbar off of a beautiful turn, but just couldn’t find the back of the net. Defensively, our attacking mids did a better job tonight of pressing the ball in transition, which made it difficult for them to start their offense. Our defense was organized and communicated well throughout the match, and our outside mids and backs matched up well with their speed and physicality.”

The second half began much like the first, with the Dux offense pressing and attacking, but the Chix defense held until the 55:00 minute mark when Kylee Winn (SO) lofted a right footed cross from the left side into the box. Hope Steenwyk made the initial save, but Tally Martinez (FR) was quicker to the rebound and her left footed blast found the back of the net. “After Tally scored, they started throwing more numbers forward to try and get the equalizer. Our defensive line showed their experience tonight and made it very difficult for them to find any rhythm – especially during the final 10 minutes when they tried to press. Mattie Busscher (JR), Kyarra Blattner (JR) and Martinez did a nice job on the outside, while Josie Bos (JR) and Lucy Bouvier (SO) kept us organized. Ryleigh Farrell (JR) earned the shutout in net, making 2 saves on the night.”

“Zeeland East is a young team with a lot of speed and athleticism. Offensively, we had a little more trouble tonight breaking them down and breaking through, but our girls were resilient in sticking with and executing our game plan. I am very proud of our effort and organization tonight.” Nice win ladies! The Dux travel to Unity Christian this Friday and hope to avenge their only conference loss this season.
