The Zeeland West girl’s track and field team defeated Unity Christian by a score of 102-35 on Tuesday night. The Lady Dux won 13 of the 17 events and set many season and personal best times with the near perfect weather conditions.
Event winners for the Lady Dux included junior Olivia Kraft winning the discus (121’1″) and shot put (37’8″), junior Brinley Schenk winning both the 1,600 (5:38.06) and the 800 (2:35.63), junior Olivia Weenum winning the 3,200 (12:48.81), junior Marissa Sterken winning the 100 hurdles (18.71), junior Julia Babinec winning the 300 hurdles (50.27), senior Josie Smith winning the pole vault (9’6″), and junior Shanna Han winning the long jump (15’6″).
The Lady Dux also won all four relays with the 4 x 100 team of Alyssa Ortiz, Allie Williams, Emily Tummel, and Shanna Han running a 54.70, the 4 x 200 team of Julia Babinec, Emma Daniels, Tara Achterhof, and Josie Smith running a 1:54.41, the 4 x 400 team of Julia Babinec, Alyssa Ortiz, Brinley Schenk, and Morgan Overweg running a 4:29.56, and the 4 x 800 relay team of Morgan Overweg, Hannah Vashaw, Diana Sias, and Paige Heckel running a 11:01.67.
Other top three finishes for the Lady Dux were Shanna Han 2nd in the 200, and Tara Achterhof 3rd in the 200, Josie Smith 2nd and Emma Daniels 3rd in the 400, Morgan Overweg 2nd and Hannah Vashaw 3rd in the 800, Olivia Weenum 2nd in the 1,600, Paige Heckel 3rd in the 3,200, Brynne Pieters 2nd and Kara Hecht 3rd in the 100 hurdles, Kayla Theodore 2nd and Marissa Sterken 3rd in the 300 hurdles, Rose Dunlap 2nd and Kaylee Bakker 3rd in the high jump, Brynne Pieters 2nd and Emily Tummel 3rd in the pole vault, Natalie Smeyers 2nd and Jennifer Andary 3rd in the long jump, and Julia Babinec 3rd in the discus.
The Lady Dux will host Byron Center on Thursday for a double dual held at Zeeland Stadium. The win moves the Lady Dux to 1-0 in OK Green action.
