The Zeeland West girl’s track and field team defeated Byron Center by a score of 115-22 on Thursday evening. The Dux won 16 of the 17 events on their way to victory. Leading the way for the Dux was freshman Tara Achterhof who was a part of three different victories on the night.
Event winners on the track included freshman Tara Achterhof with personal best times in the 100 (13.31) and 200 (28.11), junior Julia Babinec in the 100 hurdles (16.65) and the 300 hurdles (50.49), senior Josie Smith in the 400 with a personal best time of 1:04.39. Senior Morgan Overweg and junior Olivia Weenum led the way in the distance events with Weenum running a personal best in the 3,200 with a time of 12:25.55 and Overweg winning the 800 in 2:35.28
In the field events, the Dux were led by junior Olivia Kraft who was a double winner in the shot put (35’3″) and discus (114’3″), junior Natalie Smeyers and sophomore Allie Williams tying for the victory in the high jump (4’8″), senior Josie Smith in the pole vault at (9’0″), and junior Shanna Han winning the long jump (15’6.5″).
Sweeping the relays was the 4 x 100 team of Alyssa Ortiz, Emma Daniels, Emily Tummel, and Shanna Han with a season best time of 54.24, the 4 x 200 relay team of Julia Babinec, Tara Achterhof, Alyssa Ortiz, and Josie Smith with a season best time of 1:53.69, the 4 x 400 team of Morgan Overweg, Alyssa Ortiz, Emma Daniels, and Josie Smith with a time of 4:31.60, and the 4 x 800 team of Brinley Schenk, Morgan Overweg, Hannah Vashaw, and Olivia Weenum running a season best time of 10:26.13
The Dux will take the weekend off before competing against Holland next week Tuesday. The Dux are now 2-0 in the OK Green.
