Zeeland West High School
Byron Center High School
The Dux girls varsity soccer team opened the second round of conference play with a 3-0 victory over Byron Center, without giving up a shot on goal. Sam Hecht (SO) opened the scoring at the 16:38 mark of the first half for the Dux. Phoebe LaCroix (SR) gathered a ball in midfield and delivered a perfectly paced slotted ball between two Bulldog defenders into the path of Hecht’s driving run from the left hand side. Hecht took two great touches before blasting the ball past the keeper. The Dux took a 1-0 lead into the half.
It took less than 90 seconds for LaCroix to combine with Hecht again to give the Dux a 2-0 lead. Sami Lopez (SO) received a ball out of the back from the Dux defense, and made a nice turn, laying the ball into the path of LaCroix. LaCroix again found a seam and played Hecht in behind the Byron Center defense, this time on the right side of the field. The result was the same, with Hecht taking a touch before cutting the ball back and firing a ball to the right of the keeper.
LaCroix scored the final goal of the match after some clever trickeration to beat what seemed like 5 defenders before firing a right footed blast up and over the outstretched arms of the keeper and into the back of the net.
“Collectively, we played a complete team game and won all three phases of the game: offensive, defense and transition. Our defensive line was very well organized tonight. We matched their physicality and played solid proactive defense. But it was the dominant play of our midfield that disrupted their rhythm and caused frustration for them all night long. We moved the ball really well, and kept them chasing the game. I am very proud of our effort and mentality tonight. Everyone played well and contributed to the victory. Even though Ryleigh Farrell (JR) did not have to make a save tonight, her composure and distribution of the ball really opened the game up for us offensively.”
The Dux are 5-1-1 in OK Green conference play, and 7-2-2 overall.
