Zeeland West Varsity Baseball Downs Sparta, 4-1
The Zeeland West Varsity baseball team defeated Sparta 4-1 on Monday night at 5th/3rd Ballpark. Sparta took an early lead in the first inning off of a sac fly but that would be all the offense that they could come up with as Collin Merryman took no-hitter into the 7th inning in his first varsity start. “Collin’s effort tonight was incredible,” said head coach Adam Locker after the game, “he executed about as well as you could hope.” That execution was on full display in the fourth inning when two walks and a hit batter loaded the bases for Sparta. Clinging to a one-run lead, Merryman went on to strike out the next three batters to get out of the jam.
Brendan Vriezema gave the Dux the lead in the bottom of the third inning when he homered off of Albertson, driving in two runs. After Zeeland West scored on an error in the sixth inning, Connor Heckel came into the game and recorded an RBI single with a hard drive to right field that gave the Dux a 4-1 lead and secured the victory.
Collin Merryman earned the win for Zeeland West as he tossed six innings, allowing zero runs, one hit, and striking out ten. Tate DeJonge recorded the last three outs to earn the save.
Zeeland West Dux Varsity had ten hits in the game. Brendan Vriezema, Max Hecht, and Caleb Kender each collected multiple hits for the Dux. Brendan Vriezema led Zeeland West with three hits in three at bats.
The Dux will resume OK Green conference play tomorrow as they travel to Holland Christian to take on the Maroons. The first pitch of the doubleheader is set for 4pm.
