Dux News · Lady Dux Track and Field Takes 2nd, 8 Earn First Team All-Conference


The Zeeland West girl’s track and field team had their best meet of the season at Friday’s OK Green Conference Championship meet finishing in 2nd place with 114 points. The Lady Dux, who were in third heading into the meet, put enough good things together to finish the season tied for 2nd place as they just beat out third place Hamilton who finished with 109.6 points. League leading Zeeland East won the meet with 130 points. All three teams were ranked in the top five of this weeks MITCA Team State rankings.

Freshman Tara Achterhof led the Dux with top three finishes in three out of her four events. Tara won the 200 meter dash with a time of 27.29, took third in the 100 with a time of 13.06, and she was a part of the winning and school record 4×100 meter relay team. Julia Babinec was second in the 100 meter hurdles with a new school record time of 15.78 and third in the 300 hurdles with a time of 49.57. Shanna Han also had a great night finishing third in the 200 meter dash (27.84), sixth in the 100 meter dash (13.27), fourth in long jump(15’9.75″), and she also had a leg in the winning 4×100 relay team. Brinley Schenk took third in the 1,600 with a time of 5:36, third in the 3,200 with a time of 12:01.46, and was a part of the 4×800 team that took second.

Other top three finishes for the Dux came from Josie Smith and Emily Tummel tying for 3rd in the pole vault with a height of 9’6″ and Olivia Kraft took second in the discus with a throw of 116’2″. In the relays, three out of the four relay teams finished in the top three with the 4×100 team of Alyssa Ortiz, Shanna Han, Emily Tummel, and Tara Achterhof leading the way with a first place finish and a new school record with a time of 52.07, the 4×800 team of Morgan Overweg, Olivia Weenum, Avery Schenk, and Brinley Schenk ran a season best time of 10:05.94, and the 4×4 relay team of Avery Schenk, Alyssa Ortiz, Emma Daniels, and Josie Smith took third with a time of 4:20.63.

Based on their performances in the meet and throughout the season, the Lady Dux had a league leading eight first team all-conference nominations. Congratulations to the following ladies on their all-conference honors: freshman Tara Achterhof, junior Julia Babinec, junior Brinley Schenk, junior Shanna Han, senior Josie Smith, junior Olivia Kraft, freshman Emily Tummel, and junior Alyssa Ortiz.

The Lady Dux will have off until next week Saturday when they will travel to Ludington for their regional meet.
