Game Recap

A great game to watch tonight as Zeeland West and Hamilton played a very entertaining game. The Dux controlled the ball very well tonight and created a lot of scoring opportunities in both halves. Hamilton had it’s share of chances to. The Dux got on the board 1st when Carson Holwerda took a ball on the outside and played a driven ball low that was knocked in by a Hamilton defender. We have been talking about how good things happen when we play those types of balls and tonight something good happened for us. Hamilton quickly countered less than 10 minutes later. Possession went back and forth and the Dux retook the lead when Abhksek Pusty played a beautiful one time ball into the feet of Kadre Dryden and he placed an excellent ball past a diving Hamilton keeper into the side netting. Hamilton would not go away as again shortly thereafter Hamilton took a long cross and played it past a diving Branch McGeehan. The Dux got a scare as their keeper went down with about 5 minutes left in the 1st half with a neck injury and did not return. The Dux sent in back up keeper Nate Visser who played 45 minutes of shutout soccer. The half ended in a 2-2 tie. The 2nd half was just as exciting as both teams had opportunities but just couldn’t quite convert. The Dux finished with 8 shots on frame. Branch and Nate combined for 6 saves.

Game Recap

The varsity water polo team defeated the Eagles of Hudsonville on Wednesday night in an overtime thriller, 8-7. After going down 4-2 in the first half, Hudsonville fought their way back into the game and were able to tie the game midway through the fourth quarter. Late in the fourth quarter, Brendan Pinner forced a ball-under on a countering Hudsonville player and that play brought the game to overtime.

Austin Mills scored both of the goals in the regulation overtime periods for Zeeland. Again Hudsonville fought back and with a last second shot during a six-on-five advantage were able to force a final, sudden-victory overtime period. The first possession for the Eagles resulted in another man-up opportunity. However, this time Zeeland played strong defense and Tucker DeGraaf forced a shot wide. That defense led to a countering opportunity for Philip DeJonge who was able to earn an exclusion. He then found Jon Michael Hoeve on the opposite side of the cage who caught the ball cleanly and buried it in the back of the net for the game winner.

The team had contributors on both ends of the pool. In addition to Jon Michael’s and Austin’s goals, Jonathan Kollen (2), Philip DeJonge, and Tucker DeGraaf each scored from Zeeland. Philip led the team in steals with four while six other players had at least two steals including Adam Hoeve and Brandon Kraai. Brandon also had two field blocks. In goal, Brendan Pinner had ten total saves and another steal on top of the pivotal one during the fourth quarter.

The team has the weekend off and will play East Kentwood next Monday.
