Game Recap
Windy conditions Thursday night played a significant role in the outcome of the OK Green matchup between the Hamilton Hawkeyes and the Zeeland Dux. With the wind at their backs, the Dux controlled the pace and style of the game for most of the first half. Both teams struggled early to maintain any length of possession. An aggressive move by midfielder Halie Farrell (SO) 11 minutes into the first half gave the Dux some early momentum. Farrell received a ball from the outside from freshman Phoebe LaCroix, held off her defender as she turned and fired a ball up and over the ball of the Hawkeye keeper Taryn Meiste. The Dux defense gained some footing, and the midfiled began finding some rhythm with their passing. The Dux extended their lead when Hannah Elzinga’s (SR) corner kick glanced off of the fingertips of Meiste and onto Lydia Bouvier’s (SO) foot, who buried the shot in the back of the net. The Dux led at half, 2-0.
The second half began with Hamilton gaining momentum with the wind at their backs, and the Dux were forced to play solid defense for the first 10-15 minutes. Despite a back and forth battle in the second half, neither team was able to score, and stingy defensive play by both teams limited offensive opportunities.
Coach Hondorp was very pleased with the tenaciousness and aggressiveness with which his team played against the Hawkeyes. “I am really proud with the way our team adjusted to the wind in the second half. Our midfield did a really nice job tonight of applying pressure on their outside miss, and occupying space in the middle of the field. We won more 50-50 balls and were quicker to the ball than we have been all season. Our defense was stingy and really limited quality scoring opportunities by the Hawkeyes.” The held a 5-2 advantage in shots on goal. This was the first shutout of the season for the Dux, and lifts their record to 2-2 overall, and 1-2 in the conference. The Dux next game is Monday against the Dutch of Holland High.
