Zeeland West wrestling Open wrestling

Zeeland West wrestling will have open wrestling for High school and middle school wrestling on Thursday nights from 6:30 to 8:00 pm this summer on the dates listed below. Summer 2017 June 15 , June 22, June 29 July 20, July 27 August 3  

Wrestling meeting Tuesday June 2

There will be a short meeting for all students planning on wrestling next year in Coach Heckel’s room E111 on Tuesday right after school.  The meeting will be done in 15-20 minutes.

Connor Heckel wraps up season for West wrestling team

Connor Heckel ended up 0 and 2 at the state meet, with losses coming to the eventual state runner-up from Chelsea and the 6th ranked wrestler from Melvindale.  Heckel ended a tremendous 39-12 for his junior year, and will head into his senior season with 119 wins, which currently places him second on the career win

West 125 pounder Connor Heckel rebounded from a first round regional loss to win his next 2 matches including a come from behind pin in the elimination round to qualify for the individual state wrestling meet at the Palace of Auburn Hills on March 2-4.  Heckel will carry a record of 39 and 10 into

DUX Varsity Wrestlers Win Academic Award

Congratulations to our Zeeland West Varsity Wrestling Team for winning… Team Academic All State Honors! This is a great accomplishment for any team.  Typically, only about 10% of wrestling teams qualify for this honor.  In order to qualify, a team must have at least 14 varsity wrestlers, who have competed on four dates of competition,

Voravong and Heckel Qualify for regionals

West wrestlers Tahji Voravong and Connor Heckel both placed second at the Hastings district to qualify for next week’s Byron Center regional.  Senior Garrison Dershem and Freshmen Ian Heckel both fell one match short of Qualifying.  Both had great seasons.  Dershem finished  at 29-16 with a conference championship.  Ian Heckel had the third most wins

Zach VanValkenburg places 3rd in state

Zach Van Valkenburg ended his career in style as he placed third in the MHSAA state wrestling tournament.  VanValkenburg was 4 and 1 on the weekend with his only loss coming to the state champion.  This season VanValkenburg also established Zeeland West’s new career win record, season win record, and pin record.  Teammate Riley Brinks

DOUBLE CONGRATULATIONS TO ZACH VANVALKENBURG: Zach has had some hallmark achievements recently.  A month or so ago, Zach signed a letter of intent to play football at Hillsdale College, then – this past weekend he participated in the MHSAA Individual Wrestling Tournament where he earned 3rd place in the 215 lb. weight division.  Congratulation to
